Scott McCloud discusses many important factors that make understanding comics so interesting.

One of the most  basic and most fascinating is how a simple line and 2 dots can be described as a face.

We see a face from just this. such a limited amount of form and we visualize it as a face. Cartoon imagery allows us to take the least amount of information and still be able to determine what it is. Like the picture above is a face. But what makes facial recolonization so fascinating in cartooning is that eyes make all the difference.

  

Its so easy to see the faces when eyes are added. And thats just the eyes. It really brings new perspective to the googly eyes you stuck everywhere as a kid. When those are added objects own look like something else. Something familiar. It because, he goes on to say, is that we look for ourselves in everything. We look for eyes, noses, and mouths in inanimate objects like outlets and cars. We imagine their emotions from what we see when they possess no such thing. We look at the world in our own image trying to see ourselves everywhere.
