Blankets was a really hard read for me. I grew up in a not very religious family. We rarely went to church and never once was there even mention of going to a church camp like they did in this. So fo the stuggle of having to deal with religion... I just couldn't connect. Understanding it, yes. Its possible for me to see the conflict in choosing to go aginst something you've believed in for most of your young life only to realize you didn't quite believe in it after all.
But I just couldn't connect to it like that. What I could connect to was the artist problem in the story, which played such a small part. I couldn't even relate to the long distance relationship. Still the book brought to my attention to many cultural issues i wasn't aware off, mainly the one i couldn't connect with; Religion. I don't really understand it so it was interesting to see someone's life so cemented in it.
The Art itself was really interesting. It's very thick lines and dark shapes really help my eye move almost instantly to the figures. And if that panels. The way Thompson lays out his pages is incredibly interesting. At first you think its rather basic but taking another look you find something you didn't see before. He makes you look in all of the right places at one and then lets your eye wanted to discover other important details you might have missed. It was fun just flipping though pages again to look at these little things,
