Anya's Ghost by Vera Brosgol

Unlike in weeks past, I had no idea what to read for this week. Nothing specifically jumped out at me on the list of recomendations. I'm thankfully my friend eventually loaned me the book she read for the week. I'm glad she did.
Anya's Ghost is the story of Anya an imigrent who only wants to fit in. That is until she falls down a well and ends up being haunted. At first you think its a rather straight forward ghost story. The ghost and Anya bond and she learns that the people she admires don't have the best lives and the people she ignored are actually pretty descent. But then the climax comes with a plot twist I wasn't even expecting. It was a pleasure and a shock to see how the story played out and I can't help but be pleased.

All of the characters, even if they were rather basic by my standards, had their good points. Anya herself changed from the start of the story. She originally didn't care much about her background and tended to just want to focus on fitting in, so much so that she lied about her last name. By the end of the story thou she has decided on just being herself. Other characters in the story are developed in a way that at first we see them as Anya sees them. But as the story goes on, we get a glimpse of their real selves. Even the ghost isn't everything she claims to be leading to the major plot twist.

I very much liked the simply graphic art style of the book. After reading the Sandman in was a nice change of pace. The bold lines and expressions really made the story a lot more interesting. Even the simple color helped distinguished things. So it was an utter shock to get to the black pages and the book and be completely creeped out. There was no dialogue for that section and it was perfect and terrifying. Its the plot twist and I think i would have been disappointed if it was handled any other way.

Honestly I'm trying really hard to not spoil this. I want anyone else to be as surprise as I was. And I'm a person who prides them self in guessing plots.
